Berkshire Eye Center offers a full range of eyeglass lenses for children and adults in all prescriptions. Lens materials and functions vary greatly depending on the prescriptions and the frame size. For safety reasons, we recommend polycarbonate lenses for children up to eighteen years of age. Adults choose polycarbonate lenses for sports and cosmetic reasons. The polycarbonate and hi-index materials offer a much thinner, lighter weight and safer lens. Regular CR-39 (plastic) lenses are also available for most adults with moderate prescriptions.

Bifocal lenses range from the conventional lined bifocal to progressive lenses. Conventional bifocals give the patient both distance and reading vision but no intermediate vision needed for computers, dashboards, store shelves, etc. Trifocal lenses will provide three focal lengths – distance, mid range and reading. Progressives, on the other hand, offer a more natural transition from distance to mid range and reading with no lines. They are more appealing cosmetically and are available in regular plastic, polycarbonate, hi-index, and transitions. Glass lens availability is limited and is not recommended due to safety reasons and the weight of the lens.

Additional options available on most lenses are:
Transitions – lenses that lighten and darken automatically and block UV rays.
Anti-reflective coatings increase vision for night driving as well as for computer work and make lenses more appealing as reflections are eliminated from the lens surface. This option is available on all lens materials.
Cosmetic tints are available for softening the look of lenses as well as cutting computer glare, fluorescent lights, etc.

Sun lenses are available in all of the above lenses with sun tints which include UV filters for protection.
Polarized lenses are a premium sun lens which cuts reflective glare from car windows, water surfaces, etc. They also offer UV protection and are available in most prescriptions.
